Samsung recently unveiled the next beast, Galaxy Note 2 recently in an event at IFA. It features a larger display (yes, larger than previous Note), a new improved S-Pen and better performance.
People who used the first Note phablet (let’s call it Note 1), were really impressed by the device. On the other hand, it also faced serious criticism from some of the tech geeks and gadget gurus from all around the world. Nonetheless, the one of its kind phablet not only managed to survive the criticism, but also got enough consumer response that lead to the inception of Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
The first thing to be noted about the device is, it has a bigger display. The 5.5-inch screen with 1280 x 720 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio does not add much to compare with its predecessor, but S-Pen does. It comes with a new S-Pen, with greater functionality. As soon as the S-Pen slide out of the device, it shows a S-Pen specific menu. Plus, there is a new hover feature. With the new S-Pen using the hover feature, you can do a lot more stuff. It can show image previews of photos in a photo album, and while watching a video you can now see a static preview at a specific time span (just like YouTube video player on desktop computers). Check the video by Engadget, to see how the new S-Pen works.
Basically, it’s a redesigned mouse. The only thing missing from touch screen devices was hover. You were able to tap something, double-tap or tap-and-hold to get a menu right there – but there was nothing to initiate the “mouse-over” event. Now let me ask you this, how many times have you left your device’s stylus somewhere and forgot it? Happens a lot, right? Not anymore! If you leave the new S-Pen somewhere and try to walk away without it, the Galaxy Note 2 will remind you to pick it up. Nice, huh?
It has some other significant improvements too, as compared to its predecessor. Note 1 has 1.4 GHz dual-core processor, which is replaced by a massive 1.6 GHz quad-core processor in Note 2. 2 GB RAM is another improvement, which is exactly double from the previous one. A new 3,100 mAh Li-ion battery is packed inside to provide a better backup. If you see the figures, it’s thinner and has less width than Note 1.
Let’s talk about the UI. To be precise, you’ll get Jelly Bean right out of the box with all the features you liked in the previous Galaxy Note and some features from Samsung Galaxy S III. Galaxy S3′s pop-up play is there with the ability to resize the video player. For people obsessed with figures, here’s a tabular presentation.

What are your views about the new Galaxy Note 2? Would you sell your Note 1 and buy this one? Tell us in your comments, and stay tuned for more updates.

Hello Brother! I’m using Note 1 with latest Jelly Bean update. It’s working flawlessly, having no issues, No slow speed with dual-core. Quadcore is better for games only. Note 1 is not slow with apps. You can download apps large in size and use it, it will work at equal speed as Note 2. Changing for quad-core processor only is a crap idea guys!
I just received my note 2. Guys, its better than the note 1! Sell your note 1 while you can! :)
I want to sell my Galaxy Note 1. Please tell me from where can I get the best price?
Despite the specification, S-Pen in Note2 is much much better than Note1 !! I really love it!
I like this mobile dear.
Hahah sandeep you’re such a d****bag the jelly bean needs higher cores otherwise it will lag like hell making it impossible to work the note 1 as its a dual core processor even lags on a 4.0.4 android.
Hello… Samsung Galaxy Note 1 is good? Please help me!
Already got Android v4.1 Jelly Bean on Galaxy note 1 :D
May I know what is the price of Samsung Galaxy Note 1?
About to upgrade my old phone via e and e! (T-mobile). I got the Note 1 free on contract and they want £120 for the Note 2. I’m not much of a tech guy and really want it for the web. I have no computer, so I use phone to utilize the big screen. £120 is a lot of cash to me. Do you think Its worth £120 more? Cheers, Phil.

I think it’s worth 120 pounds more as it utilizes faster processor and 2 times more ram, which will make the phone much more fluid. You won’t regret it as Note 2 is going to have Samsung’s support until Note 4 or Note 5 is released, and it’s going to have unofficial support even after that. And Note 2′s Nature UX is much more user friendly than Note 1′s Touchwiz.
I’ve just got the note 1 and very pleased but I upgraded the software to the latest v4. Whatever… Be careful because I have just bought an iPhone and it does not support flash.
Hi! My note 1 keeps on lagging and restarting sometimes when watching movies or answering calls using Bluetooth to car stereo. Whats wrong? Unit is updated to ice cream sandwich. Help!
Hi Geof! Have you tried factory reset? There is nothing to worry about if that doesn’t work either. Just walk into your nearest Samsung service center, they’ll get it fixed.
No. Never. That’s true that they have upgraded the processor and RAM, but out of that all points are leading to Note 1.
Even the display pixels are low in Note 2.
Front Camera better in Note 1.
The new shape is also not much attractive.
And Jelly Bean is gonna be there in note 1 soon.
Conclusion is, keep Note 1 and Save your money.
You do know the display on the note 2 is better than one because it uses an rgb matrix and not a pentile. So it seams like a downgrade but is actual better and it’s even a better display than galaxy s3 because an rgb matrix doesn’t need as many pixels to put out a better display. As well the cameras are improved so 1.9 front shots better than the old 2 on notes one.
I will be selling my Note 1 for the Note 2 just so I will have the latest phone.
Hi. Thanks for the comparison. After getting the Note 1 recently, it’s good to find out what I’ll be ‘missing out’ on (not too bothered from the looks of it).
Regarding Jelly Bean update for Note 1. Do you know if it’s possible to rollback to a previous version once you’ve upgraded? For example if I upgrade to Jelly Bean from ICS, and something goes wrong, is it possible/easy to rollback to ICS?
I’m asking because when I updated my iPhone 3GS it ruined the device, and I couldn’t roll back.
Thanks.
Hey, Rich Talbot.
My advice is, just update it without worrying. There are no errors/bugs.
Even if you experience any such issue, you can do a factory reset and that will probably fix everything.
If nothing works, take the device to a Samsung service center. They can rollback/fix the OS.
You can rollback at home by rooting your device, but I won’t recommend it because it’ll void the warranty.
Wow! Great read. Thanks for sharing. Can we get new release Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S1 comparison too? I am eagerly waiting for this. Also, I feel like Apple gives software update for old models, Samsung should also do that.
